10 Takeaways from CONNECT

In partnership with

The energy at Teachable x Creator Economy NYC CONNECT was electric! After a full day of insightful panels, networking with fellow creators, and soaking up wisdom from industry leaders, I'm buzzing with inspiration.

If you missed it (or just want to relive the magic), here are my 10 biggest takeaways that stood out:

1. The Knowledge Creator Economy is Booming

Gone are the days when "creator" only meant entertainment. The knowledge creator economy is thriving, with experts in everything from data analytics to travel planning transforming their expertise into valuable digital products. As Jack Appleby put it: "Every niche is valuable if you're providing genuine value to your audience."

2. Self-Awareness is the Foundation of Authenticity

Elfried Samba dropped this gem: "Everything starts with self-awareness." Understanding your unique value proposition is key to building an authentic brand. He recommends using the ikigai framework to find your purpose by asking: What are you passionate about? What are you good at? What can you be paid for? What does the world need?

3. Diversification is the New Security

The word of the year? Diversification! Nearly every panelist emphasized how crucial it is to have multiple income streams. Brand deals might be lucrative, but adding digital products, newsletters, consulting, and speaking engagements creates stability and freedom. As Gabby Beckford noted: "Money is everywhere—it's just a matter of figuring out how to tap into it sustainably."

4. Get Started Now, Perfect Later

The biggest obstacle most creators face isn't competition—it's themselves. "Just start!" was a recurring theme throughout the conference. As Jess Ramos shared: "If you're newer to making content, you're probably going to cringe at your videos a few months from now, but you just have to do it."

5. AI is an Amplifier, Not a Replacement

Rather than replacing creators, AI is helping them scale. From organizing content and generating rough drafts to creating subtitles in multiple languages, creators are using AI to enhance their output while preserving their unique voice. The tools are getting better at handling the administrative work so creators can focus on connection.

6. Passive Income Takes Active Work

The allure of "making money while you sleep" is real, but creating passive income products takes significant upfront effort. The payoff? You can make money while you’re sipping cocktails on a beach somewhere! 🍹 Meaning, by building passive income, you can actually take time off as a creator!

PRO TIP: I always recommend to my clients to aim first to pay your monthly bills from recurring revenue. Once you’ve unlocked this you get so much more control over what you say yes and no to because you aren’t scrambling to pay the bills.

7. Build Your Business Around Your Life, Not Vice Versa

Several speakers emphasized lifestyle design as the ultimate goal. Terry Rice shared: "I'm really just trying to make my life simpler. We're always chasing this future version of ourselves where we have no problems whatsoever. We should probably try to make that happen now."

8. Your Unique Perspective is Your Competitive Edge

In a world where technical information is freely available, people pay for your unique perspective and approach. As Timm Chiusano shared, it's about reflecting on all your experiences—both successes and failures—and using them to shape distinctive content that only you can create. He emphasized starting with yourself and what excites you rather than just what people are asking for. "Get paid for who you are, not what you do," he advised, noting that your personal journey and insights are what truly differentiate your content in a crowded marketplace.

9. Own Something Off Social Media

Five years from now, the most successful creators will be the ones who own something off social media. Whether it's a newsletter with 40% open rates, a thriving course, or a membership community, building assets you control is crucial for long-term sustainability.

10. Community Over Followers

Size doesn't always matter when it comes to audience. Many successful creators emphasized quality over quantity, having 1,000 dedicated fans who will buy your products is more valuable than 100,000 followers who never engage. Focus on building genuine connections with people who truly value what you offer.

Moving Forward

As I reflect on everything I learned at Teachable x Creator Economy NYC Connect, one thing is clear: there's never been a better time to be a creator. The tools are accessible, the audience is eager, and the possibilities are endless.
